Using Jim Johnson's book, The Sixty-Second Motivator, in just 1-2 hours (the time it takes you to read this book), you can learn what it often takes courses, lengthy DVDs, and major volumes to teach. Johnson bases this work on research results (rather than simply on his own personal experiences), but in a friendly, low-key, well-written, enjoyable, easy-to-understand manner, he offers practical tips and valuable insights about why we do and do not do things. | I will give this book thumbs up on getting to the point as well as being easy to comprehend, but in the end I felt like there is more to the subject and it has been left out.
What if sixty seconds doesn't get it? Can one develope a protocol that is sucessfull without cultivating frustration in the motivator? I would like to understand how to let go and come back later after planting a seed.
I understand the man is a professional and needed results now, but as an individual who is struggling with motivation, I would have scenarios that took longer, yet still achieved the desired result. Perhaps an addendum of "What if" situations that had failure initially, yet success at the end with a decription of how the journey was made in the context of more time than a mere minute +.
Of course that's out of the context of sixty-second motivation isn't it?
Never the less, the book was helpful and insightful so therefore 3 stars. It was worth the modest price and short time needed to digest it. |

| Being a cardiac rehab nurse, and spending a lot of time each day trying to get people to change their lifestyles to create better health, this book caught my eye. After reading it, I found the principles instantly useful for me to use at work. They can help anyone get motivated to get past the barriers that keep them from making changes to improve their health. Additionally, the book is short and to the point which is good for a busy Mom like myself.
If you want more info on it before purchasing, I suggest you check out some of the links in the comments section below to get some unbiased reviews from other independent sites (some of the reviews here seem a little way out, like they had an axe to grind with the author or something). You really can't find much bad written about this neat little book!

| | This is a simple, easy to read explanation of motivational interviewing - probably the most effective way to help people change. Using a story format helps not only with remembering the information, but with knowing how to apply it, either for yourself, or for someone else. I'm a psychologist, and I'm trying to use this technique more in my work, so I've read professional books, watched DVDs, talked to colleagues, etc. I can honestly say this little book has probably helped me just as much as any of those. Highly recommended. |
