Welded 6061 aluminum, clips onto Topeak MTX or EX Beam Racks. Recommended when using the MTX Trunk Bag EXP on MTX/EX racks.
Compatible with MTX trunk bags with a maximum 20-pound capacity, the Topeak MTX beam rack lets you carry clothes, gear, groceries, and whatever else you want on the rear of your bike. The rack--which is designed for mountain bike or heavy commuting use--includes two rubber bungees for attaching items, along with a safety reflector to illuminate your bike after dusk. Other features include an improved QR mechanism that's ultra secure and easy to use, a RedLite mount, and a tail light mount. The bike rack is available in three different frame sizes: A-type for small frames, E-type for normal frames, and V-type for large frames.

| Great rack, the downward angle is perfect on my road bike. Holds well on the seat post. I would not recommend using it on a carbon fiber seat post just for safety reasons. Other than that it is a great rack |

High quality shims that lock in place and fit a wide range of post diameters.
Be sure to get the proper type to insure clearance with the rear tire. |

This is my third seat post rack. Overall, when combined with a Topeak bag, it's the best. I can't speak to longevity as I have only had the rack for one month. I bought one for me and one for my wife. Both fit our bikes perfectly, because of the availability of three different shapes (E, A, or V types). The real plus is when you combine this rack with a Topeak bag that just slides on and locks into place.
This rack is rated for 20 pounds. As the rack is relatively light, I would not challenge this limitation. If you need to carry a ton, there are heavier racks out there - I own one. But if you don't need a steel girder for your luggage, this lighter weight is nice. It's enough for my needs.
Some reviews state that the rack wanders from side to side. In my experience, that would only happen if you did not secure it tight enough, or overloaded it. That being said, I wish it bolted to the seat-post to reduce the opportunity for theft. That is the primary reason for not giving it five stars. But overall, it's a great rack and rack system. |

A great idea but lacks refinement. This rack is ideal if you live in a low crime area and don't hall much very often. I don't hall much but this rack screams take me. I would have loved to see a bolt on connection at least that would make the thief do some work. If you can get it tight enough to your post this rack will work well. I felt the quick release is wasted because I want the rack on most of the time. Good: functions well, and looks nice. Bad: Price a bit high for this price you could get a more sturdy 4 point connection rack, hard to get the perfect fit, easily stolen.

My bike will not accomodate a regular rack so my options are limited. Sure, I could rig something up with stay clamps, but when I don't need the rack it would be a pain to take off.
This rack gets the job done, plus it's so easy to install/remove...quick release! The rack does have a tendancy to shift, but to alleviate this I recommend whipping off your seat post with alcohol to remove any grease/dirt to ensure a good seal, it will help cut down on lateral movement of the rack.
If you're just using the trunk bag without panniers you don't have much to worry about if the rack shifts a little to one side or the other. If you're going to use the pannier bags you'll want to get the pannier adapter kit to keep the bags out of your spokes. This is when the rack shift can cause a problem and cause the pannier adapter to rub on your back wheel.
I did a 332 mile ride in 5 days and only had to adjust the rack a few times because it shifted. I road in solid rain for two days and I think that helped the rack slide more so than it would have if I had been riding in dry conditions. I was able to nudge the rack back into position with my foot while riding so it wasn't too much of an inconvenience.
I'd give it 4 1/2 stars if it were an option just for the fact that the rack is prone to shifting when fully loaded...but it is what it is. Just keep in mind to make sure your seat post is free of dust & grease and it should minimize any sideways movement. |
